A theater camp held by a retired schoolteacher in Leesville may become a mainstay for the children of Leesville.
The camp, run by Linda Harris, a retired schoolteacher, and Tabby Neubert, a professional choreographer, was held at the Polk Memorial Episcopal Church in Leesville. The seven-day camp, held from July 5-14, was open to children in grades one through six and was capped by a performance of the musical "Arkeology" at the church Thursday, July 14.
Harris said that all of the participants, 30 in all, enjoyed themselves at the camp.
"They all had a great time," she said. "All the kids said they'd come back next year."
She said, however, that the participants weren't the only people who enjoyed the camp.
"Everyone who helped with the play this year stayed the entire time," she said. "Everything was just wonderful."
Harris said she was already planning to hold the camp again next year, but with a few changes. She said that the length of the camp would be increased from seven days to two weeks and that the play performed would be different as well.
That play, she said, might be "Louisiola," a musical Harris wrote which is a variation of a well-known story.
"It's like Cinderella with a Cajun twist," she said. "Instead of a glass slipper, there's a boot and instead of going to the ball, she goes to the Mardi Gras in New Orleans."
She also said that the Vernon Parish Arts Council has approached her about helping to sponsor the event next year. Harris, however, said that one of the biggest goals is to increase visibility.
"I just want the word to get out to more people," she said.
