Leesville gumbo cookoff set for Feb. 18

Leesville will host its second annual Gumbo Cook Off at 9 a.m. on Feb. 18 in historic downtown Leesville.
The event is in conjunction with the Leesville Mardi Gras Parade, which will take place at 2 p.m.
Registration must be done by Feb. 11; registration fee is $25 per contestant. A grand prize of $500 will be offered for each category, which includes chicken and pork, seafood, wild game, and vegetarian. Contestants will be cooking enough gumbo to feed a crowd; all-you-can-eat gumbo will be available for $7 for adults and $3 for children.
Contestants may enter more than one category but each entry will be considered separate. Contestants may also enter as individuals or teams; organizations and businesses are also allowed to enter.
The event, which is in memory of Leesville's first Main Street Manager, Dicky Berry, will also feature live music, a $100 cash prize for the best decorated booth, a people's choice award and a raffle.
Cooking may begin after 7 a.m. on Feb. 18. Set-up begins at 7 a.m. but must occur by 9 a.m. Judging will commence at 11:30 a.m., with three judges scoring each gumbo on appearance, aroma, consistency, texture and flavor.
