Central Louisiana Area Health Education Center (Central Louisiana AHEC) and LSU Health -Shreveport recently presented the “Day with the Doctors” program for high
school juniors and seniors living in CLAHEC’s eight parish region around the Alexandria area. This unique program was a one-day interactive experience that provided students who are interested in the medical field or a health career with an opportunity to observe a day’s activities on a medical school campus and to job shadow different medical professionals.
On Jan. 18, 50 qualifying students traveled to LSU Health Shreveport. Students got to tour different departments throughout the medical school and hospital at LSU Health Shreveport. They toured the burn unit, anatomy lab, emergency center, pharmacy department, radiology center and the human simulation lab. Students were given the opportunity to learn and practice listening to breathing and heart sounds, taking blood pressure and basic life support practices through one-on-one interaction with LSU Health Shreveport medical students and physicians. They also learned about human gross organs and were able to differentiate between healthy and diseased organs during an anatomy session in the core anatomy lab. Dr. Scott Kennedy, Dean of Admissions for LSU School of Medicine- Shreveport, talked to the students about admissions and requirements for medical school.
Vernon Parish students who participated in the day were Matthew Alford from Hornbeck High School, Melissa Flores and Donald MacDonald from Pickering High School, Elizabeth Henson from Pitkin High School, Jason Allardyce, Lance French, and Eden Solinsky from Rosepine Senior High School.
