Christianna Burwell of Leesville joined district 30 State Sen. John Smith (D-Leesville) and other youth during testimony before the Senate Government Affairs Committee here recently.
The group was promoting a resolution Smith authored that will establish “Christian Heritage Week in Louisiania.” Seth Matherne of French Settlement and Morgan LeDoux of DeRidder, along with Burwell, testfied on behalf of Senate Concurrent Resolution 40 by emphasizing the Christian heritage the founding fathers gave to our nation, the importance of Supreme Court rulings on religion and the state and why this resolution is important to the residents of Louisiana.
“I’m especially honored that these bright young people would come forward and make a statement for the values we all hold so dear,” said Smith. “It’s important that we recognize the heritage that has made this country so great.”
Senate Concurrent Resolution 40 established the week of May 10-16, 2009 as “Christian Heritage Week in Louisiana.”
Among other things, the resolution cites many examples of “leaders who were pivotal figures of American history and statesmen with faith and integrity who did not hesitate to express their Christian beliefs” and encourages the people of Louisiana to do the same.
SCR 40 received unanimous support in the Senate.
