The 2011 West Louisiana Forestry Festival and Fair Senior Citizens Day began at 8:30 with registration and refreshments, including wash pot coffee with cookies and donuts provided by Sheriff Sam Craft, TRIAD and the Sheriff's Department.
While senior citizens gathered inside the auditorium at the fair grounds for entertainment and door prizes, preschoolers swarmed the midway to test the kiddie rides. Senior Day, a long-standing tradition, is made possible by a number of organizations and businesses.
To kick things off, a U.S. Flag Ceremony and a POW/MIA Flag were presented by retired Com. Sgt. Maj. Jim Myrick, Fort Polk soldiers and former Prisoners of War.
Master of Ceremonies Rick Barnickel kept things moving along, with an invocation by Rev. Maurice Johnson and a welcome by Craft.
Door prizes were presented to seniors by Elaine Crews, Ethel Hall and Jeanette Ambler, while the fair board awarded cash prizes and certificates to the eldest male and female senior, the longest married couple and the couple most recently wed.
Lester Kees and Tracy Reese provided entertainement, with classic gospel and other tunes, while Meals on Wheels auctioned off a number of items, including a king-sized quilt, barbeque pits and rocking chairs, all donated by elected officials.
The parish's state delegation of Reps. James Armes III, Frankie Howard and Sen. John Smith spoke briefly to the crowd before Johnson blessed the meal.
While the seniors were entertained, they could also take the opportunity to have their blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and eyes checked. Legal services were also provided.
