House Speaker Jim Tucker appointed state Representative James Armes (D-Leesville) to serve as a delegate to the Southern Regional Education Board's (SREB) 59th Annual Legislative Work Conference November 14-6 in Annapolis, Md.
Called "America's best education work session for legislators," conference topics include state policies and practices to increase the number of postsecondary degrees and certificates; effective middle grades education; and state college readiness initiatives, including career and technical pathways.
"I believe James' conscientiousness and concern for improving all facets of education make him the perfect delegate to represent Louisiana," said Tucker, who also thanked Armes for his willingness to serve.
SREB is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that works with 16 member states to improve pre-K-12 and higher education. The organization aims at educational progress through research, reports and recommendations for action on issues at every level of public education. It works directly with schools, training educators in best practices, increasing students' access to online learning and adult education, providing resources for classroom and online teachers, collecting and analyzing data on pre-K-20 education, and reporting state progress on student achievement.
Armes, who was elected in 2007, serves on the House Appropriations and Education committees, the Joint Legislative Committee on the Budget, and the Special Committee on Military and Veterans Affairs. He is also a member of the Democratic Caucus and Legislative Rural Caucus.
