At Tuesday's Vernon Parish School Board meeting, Richard Schwartz was named as the interim district three (Evans) representative for the board.
The appointment took immediate effect due to the resignation of Beryl Ford at last Thursday's meeting due to a conflict of interest. A special election will be held in November to name a successor for the remainder of the term.
John Norris, insurance consultant for the board, also announced concerns about the upcoming property renewal. Norris stated that the public officials, crimes and equipment floaters policies are all up beginning July 1, but that property insurance "disturbs" him. According to Norris, some insurance companies have raised their insurance premiums by 25 percent because of models provided by Risk Management Solutions, RMS, who develop storm models for insurance companies. He said their current property insurance provider, CNA, would not give new prices to avoid bidding. Norris stated that a new company, Affiliated FM, gave a quote of $159,883, which is only a $6,000 difference from what they previously paid CNA, $153,100.
"It's broader coverage, for slightly more," said Norris.
Norris stated the board is not legally obligated nor is it in their best interest to bid every year. Norris said he uses the regular rhythm of the market place when deciding to bid.
"We only go out from time to time when in the board's advantage," he said. The board will hold a finance committee at 4 p.m. March 13 to further discuss new premiums. Norris will also be present to answer any questions.
Also discussed were policy changes for IDDF, which involves restraints and seclusion's for special education students to be taken to a safer environment when needed. Board members raised concerns about parents being notified before or after being restrained, but Superintendent Jackie Self reiterated that no student would be left unsupervised and that trained personnel would accompany the student at all times. The revision was passed in a 9-1 vote.
