A group of soldiers from Fort Polk decided to hold a food and clothing drive for the community here.
"Soldiers receive help, and now we want to give back to the community," said Sgt. Maj. Shawn Jones. Jones, Staff Sgt. Michael Smith, Staff Sgt. Christopher Danvers and Staff Sgt. Domek Franco are all of the Aviation Division in the JRTC Operations Group.
Jones and company decided to hold a food and clothing drive to help the community's families in need. The drive started in their division and soon spread out to the brigade level. The soldiers had drop-off boxes and locations to collect the clothes.
"We want to do something community-oriented every quarter," said Jones. He said that the focus of the efforts were to give back to the communities that support the soldiers. The group collected multiple bags of food and over 300 pounds of food. The food was donated to God's Food Box in DeRidder and the clothes were delivered to the W. D. West House of Care.
