Leona Stephens, 79, of Baytown, Texas, passed away on Thursday, January 1, 2009, at a local healthcare facility. She was born on May 23, 1929, in Leesville, the daughter of Albert and Lillie (Boswell) Davis. Leona was a nurse’s aide and worked in nursing homes for many years. She enjoyed word games, puzzles, crocheting, and cooking for her family. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rosepine and loved to read her Bible.
Preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edwin Stephens; brothers, Carl and Dee Davis; son, Dow Stephens; grandchildren, Jackie Bruce Smith, Jason Hogg, Melissa Asbill, and Brendan Jackson; she is survived by son, Steve Stephens and wife, Brandy, of Dayton; daughters, Beverley Vaughn and husband, Harold, of Old River-Winfree, Gayle Block and husband, Dave, of Baytown, Joan Whitlatch and husband, Jim, of El Paso, Pam Bell and husband, Bob, of San Antonio, Donna Hogg and husband, Jack, of Lott, and Janet Gerken and husband, Alan, of Dayton; sister, Lenora Nienstedt and husband, Byron; sister-in-law, Ineta Davis; grandchildren, Bruce and Brian Smith, Jimmy and John Whitlatch, Jaclyn Gonzalez, Hope Dow, Tiffany Jackson, Jason Hogg, Colby, Ryan, and Payton Stephens, and Becca Kershaw-Stephens; nine great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Sunday, January 4, 2009, from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. at Crespo and Jirrels Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. at Crespo and Jirrels Chapel, with Bro. Danny Biddy officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
