LSU junior running back Derrius Guice and junior linebacker Arden Key were selected to the 81st Maxwell Award Watch List, while Key and junior cornerback Kevin Toliver II were named to the 23rd Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List, The Maxwell Football Club announced Monday.

The watch lists are the first of 16 total set to be announced over the next two weeks. The Maxwell Award, named in honor of Robert W. “Tiny” Maxwell, has been given to America’s College Player of the Year since 1937.

The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1995.

Key is one of six players named to both the Maxwell and Bednarik watch lists. Key set the single-season sacks record a year ago with 12. The Atlanta, Georgia, native totaled three PBUs and recovered three fumbles in 2017.

Guice was one of the most electric ball carriers in the nation a year ago on the way to two school records, All-America honors and first-team All-SEC selection by the league’s coaches and the AP. The Baton Rouge native scored on the longest run in LSU history (96 yards) and set the single-game rushing records with 285 yards in a win over Texas A&M.

Toliver is expected to continue his impressive play that was seen in all 12 games of the Jacksonville, Florida, native’s freshman year and seven games in 2016 before suffering an injury. In seven games a year ago, Toliver recorded 21 tackles, including 12 solo.

Semifinalists for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced Oct. 30, 2017, while the three finalists for each award will be unveiled Nov. 20. The winners of the 2017 Maxwell and Bednarik Awards will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on Dec 7.

The formal presentations of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Tropicana Hotel & Casino Atlantic City on March 9, 2018.
