The Rosepine Eagles can hardly wait until Friday evening.
The Eagles, which finished last year with a record of 9-2, will take to the road, journeying a few miles north on U.S. 171 to Red Devil Stadium where they will compete in the Pickering Jamboree.
"The jamboree is basically just another practice," Rosepine head coach Johnny Cryer said. "It's mainly just a dress rehearsal which gives all the fans a sneak peek at the upcoming season.
"But, it will be under the Friday night lights, so it should be a little more intense," he added. "And, it will give us one more chance to take a look at some players who haven't had as much time on the field."
The Eagles are coming off a solid performance in Merryville last week, where they scored 10 touchdowns combined between the varsity and junior varsity teams.
"I was pleased with what we were able to do at the scrimmage," Cryer said. "Now, we have to go out, work harder and execute better at the jamboree."
Rosepine averaged just over seven yards per play, with most of its 212 yards coming from the ground game as quarterback Klint White ran for 78 yards and a couple of touchdowns, while senior tailback Gary Suydam added 68 yards and a score.
According to Cryer, White is in good health coming off foot and shoulder problems, while Suydam, who had knee surgery in December, is dealing with a serious head cold at the moment.
"Gary has been sick and has missed practice," Cryer said. "But he's got three days to get better, plus, we have some other backs we need to look at. If Gary doesn't play the jamboree, it won't hurt us."
On the defensive side of things, the Eagles lost a potential starter as transfer Craig Carlson was ruled ineligible.
"We are going to move Daygan Gardner out to the defensive end to take Carlson's place and rotate Truitt Johnson and Clay Whitehead at the defensive tackle," Cryer said.
One of the main goals for Rosepine in the jamboree, where the Eagles will play one 10-minute quarter each against Pickering and Hamilton Christian, is to come out of the event without serious injury.
"We need to come out of this thing healthy, just like the scrimmage last week," Cryer said. "We want to come out, execute and try to build some momentum going into our season opener next week at Rayne."
The Pickering Jamboree will begin at 6 p.m. Friday with two 10-minute quarters of junior varsity football between Rosepine and Pickering. Two quarters of junior high football between Rosepine and Pickering will follow, each lasting eight minutes.
Pickering and Hamilton Christian will take to the field at approximately 7:30 p.m. for one 10-minute period. The Eagles will follow against Hamilton Christian for another 10-minute period before facing Pickering to end the contest.
