You'll have to forgive first-year head coach Lane Cook if he isn't concerned about winning on Friday at the Pickering Jamboree.
There are other things on his check list for the 6 p.m. event at Red Devil Stadium.
"This is basically just another practice, but it's going to be under the lights," Cook said. "I'm not really worried about winning. What I am worried about is we can go out sharp and show some progress. I want to see if we understand what we are supposed to be doing."
Junior varsity play opens the jamboree as Pickering will take on Rosepine for two 10-minute periods. The seventh and eighth grade teams from Pickering will be on the field for one eight-minute period each against Rosepine following the junior varsity action.
Following the completion of the junior high portion of the contest, the varsity teams will hit the field, approximately about 7:30 p.m. Pickering will take on Hamilton Christian for one 10-minute period, before watching the Warriors face Rosepine for a 10-minute frame.
The final 10-minute quarter will be between Pickering and Hamilton Christian. There will be no live kicking in the jamboree.
According to Cook, this week of practice has gone well following a tough scrimmage last week in Lake Charles.
"Things are good," Cook admitted. "We are still preparing for our opening game next week against Logansport and the kids are working really hard."
The Red Devils came out of the scrimmage with Hamilton Christian with some minor injuries, but nothing very serious. However, potential starters Anthony Dixon and Joe Cummings will likely sit out the jamboree in an effort to quicken the healing process.
"We are going to be without a couple of potential starters, but that will allow us to look at more kids," Cook said. "It will give us a chance to evaluate players and where we need to put our best 11 on the field on both sides of the ball."
The Red Devils will open the regular season at 7 p.m. Sept. 3, at home against Logansport. Last year, Logansport beat Pickering on the field, but due to the use of an ineligible player, the Tigers had to forfeit the victory to the Red Devils.
Pickering High School has season tickets available at the front office during regular school hours. The tickets are $35 apiece, which covers admission to all five home dates of the 2010 campaign.
