Mission accomplished.
The senior-laden Rosepine Eagles knocked off the Hamilton Christian Warriors on Friday night at the Pickering Jamboree, 7-0, while closing the evening with a 0-0 tie against the hosting Red Devils.
"We got what we needed out of the jamboree," veteran Rosepine head coach Johnny Cryer said. "I feel pretty good about our depth at running back and I'm really proud of our defense. Overall, things went well."
In the two quarters of play, Rosepine limited the opposing teams to just 70 yards and four first downs. The Eagles held the spread offense of Hamilton Christian to just 56 yards, while keeping Pickering to just 14 yards.
"I think we are going to be better defensively this year than we were last year," Cryer said. "We played two much-improved teams last night. Hamilton Christian is going to be a very good team in 1A and Pickering is coming on and headed in the right direction under coach [Lane] Cook."
Rosepine took to the field for one 10-minute quarter against Hamilton Christian and immediately went three-and-out.
Hamilton Christian managed to get a first down thanks to the running of Cameron Meyer, who showed his ability throwing the ball with 120 yards passing against Pickering in the first action of the night.
Eventually, HCA stalled thanks to an offensive pass interference and loss of down, forcing a punt.
The Eagles took over at their own 28 and used an 11-play drive to score the only points of the contest.
Kameron Suire reeled in a 13-yard pass early on from Klint White for a first down. White later picked up six yards on third down to garner another first down and Timmy Davis converted on another third down to get the Eagles to the HCA 36.
White gained seven yards on the ensuing play, which also saw the Warriors get flagged for a personal foul.
Two plays later, White hustled in from 14 yards out for the touchdown. With Jacob Hill's extra point, Rosepine owned a 7-0 lead.
Hamilton Christian went to the air to pick up a couple of first downs as Meyer connected with Justin Griffin on a 13-yard gain and hooked up with Marco Richard for 14 yards to the Rosepine 43.
However, Meyer's next three passes were incomplete, leaving HCA with a fourth-and-10 situation. Meyer tried to connect with a wide receiver on a fly pattern down the sideline on fourth down, but Davis intercepted the ball and fell at the 16 to seal the win.
Rosepine had a total of 64 yards, while Hamilton Christian added 56 yards.
White completed 2-of-5 passes for 18 yards, while also rushing for 22 yards on four carries with one touchdown. Davis added 17 yards on three carries.
Meyer completed just 4-of-11 passes for 37 yards and an interception. He also had 19 yards rushing.
Rosepine didn't get too many plays off in its 0-0 tie with Pickering, running just eight plays, which gained 18 yards. Pickering ran 13 plays, but netted just 14 yards in the uneventful frame.
"Like I said, we got what we needed out of it and we came away injury free," Cryer said. "Now, we need to get ready for Rayne."
The Eagles will take to the road Friday for a matchup against Class 3A Rayne. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
