The Hornbeck Lady Hornets and head coach Tim Parker are currently hosting a two-week long summer basketball league, which began Tuesday afternoon and evening with six games. Although score is not officially kept in the games and the teams play two 15-minute running halves, the competitive nature of all the players is still quite evident. During the first four games of action on Tuesday, Hornbeck knocked off Converse, Many downed the Anacoco Lady Indians, Leesville and Pickering battled to a tie and Anacoco dropped a close decision to Converse. Later in the day, Many and Leesville took to the court against each other, while Hornbeck closed out the day with a matchup against Pickering. The league returns to action on Thursday, with Pickering and Anacoco matching up in the first game at 3 p.m. Hornbeck....30 Converse....7 Despite playing without all-stater Breanna Poston, the Hornbeck Lady Hornets had little trouble dispatching of the Converse Lady Cats, 30-7. Hornbeck made more three-pointers during the first half of action than it did from two-point land. Kaitlyn Fields got the scoring started with a three-pointer, while Kendra Slaughter, Laken Baggs and Haley Brister later hit long range bombs for the Lady Hornets. They also got inside jumpers from Megan Self and Shawna Boose, along with a free throw from Baggs to open up a 17-5 lead at the half. Hornbeck scored the first 13 points of the second half, getting four points from Boose, a three-pointer from Fields, a bucket by Self and a shot each from Annslea Whiddon and Stormie Pollock to open up a 30-5 lead, the largest of the game for the Lady Hornets. Boose and Fields led the way with six points each as Hornbeck had a total of eight players score. Many.....39 Anacoco....16 Despite trailing at the halftime break, the Many Lady Tigers took control early in the second half, closing the game with a 31-6 run en route to a 39-16 victory over the Anacoco Lady Indians. Amber Sharp scored six of Anacoco's 10 first-half points, while Leslie Welch and Angela Ortiz scored two each as the Lady Indians seemed to be in control of the pace of play. But it didn't take long for Many to go on a huge run, thanks to making five three-pointers during the final run. Anacoco did manage a bucket each from Emma McCormack, Hilary Kees and Brittany Merchant in the second half. Sharp led the way with six points, while five other Lady Indians scored a bucket each. Leesville....28 Pickering....28 The Pickering Lady Red Devils battled back from a 10-point deficit in the second half to secure a tie with the Leesville Lady Cats, 28-28. Malachi McQueen and Tiffany Wallace got Leesville out to a quick 7-0 lead, before a pair of buckets from Aaliyah Sheppard got Pickering on the board. Back-to-back buckets from Chelsea Martin pushed Leesville out to a seven-point lead again, but the Lady Red Devils battled back to get to within four at the break, 16-12. Leesville moved out to a 10-point lead with a 6-0 run to open the second half, but Sami Thomas, Nastasha Webber, Katherine Brinkley and Drucilla Rudolph help Pickering close out the half on a 16-6 run, tying the game at 28-28. The Lady Red Devils had one last chance to win, but a Brinkley 14-footer with time expiring bounced around the rim and fell to the floor, ending the contest with a tie. McQueen and Wallace scored 10 points each for Leesville, while Martin finished with eight points. Thomas led Pickering with eight points, while Sheppard, Brinkley, Rudolph and Webber added four points each. Converse....23 Anacoco....20 Kristyn Craig scored six of her 11 points during a crucial second-half surge to lift the Lady Cats of Converse to a comeback win over Anacoco, 23-20. Behind six points from Amber Sharp, Anacoco owned a 10-9 lead at the break. The Lady Indians also got a bucket apiece from Nicole Wenthe and Leslie Welch during the half. Sharp scored four quick points in the second half to help Anacoco take a three-point lead, but Craig led the Lady Cats on a 12-6 run to close out the game for the win. Sharp paced Anacoco with 10 points, while Wenthe, Welch, Nicole Phillips, Hilary Kees and Angela Ortiz added two points each.
