The Anacoco Indians closed out 2009 on a 15-game winning streak. However, they couldn't extend it to 16 games in their first game of 2010. Despite a game-high 24 points from junior center Matt Moss, the Indians saw their winning streak snapped at the hands of the Midland Rebels on Saturday at Prather Coliseum on the campus of Northwestern State University, 58-47. The first of six games in the I-49 Shootout proved to be a close one early on as both teams led during the first and second quarters. The lead changed hands seven times during the first period, along with there being a couple of ties. Miles Prejean gave Midland (21-3) the initial lead of the game, only to see Anacoco (15-3) get a bucket from point guard Chris Lenahan, tying the contest at 2-2. Midland retook the lead on a free throw from Michael Vincent, but a jumper in the lane by Moss gave Anacoco its first advantage of the game. The Rebels got a three-pointer from Colby Gantt, along with a bucket each from Prejean and Allen Fontenot in a 7-2 run, taking a 10-6 lead, before Anacoco used a 7-1 run of its own to claim the edge. After Prejean gave Midland the 10-6 edge, the Indians got a three-pointer and a jumper from John Reese, along with a basket in the paint from Moss, allowing Anacoco to take a 13-11 edge. However, Midland had a 14-13 lead at the end of the first period thanks to a three-pointer in the waning seconds from Fontenot. Prejean pushed the Midland edge to 16-13 with a bucket early in the second, but back-to-back baskets from Moss and Clinton McCrary sent Anacoco back out front, 17-16. That would be Anacoco's last lead. Beginning with five straight points from B.J. Cormier, the Rebels put together a 16-5 surge, getting five points from Prejean as well during the run, allowing Midland to take a 32-22 lead. Anacoco did manage to trim the deficit to single digits by the halftime intermission with a basket each by Reese and Lenahan, getting the Indians to within six, 32-26, heading into the locker room. The Indians managed to stay within striking distance early in the third, but a pair of three-pointers from Vincent, along with a layup, sent Midland on another run, this one allowing the Rebels to got up by 18 points, 47-29. Moss hit a bucket late in the third quarter to stop the Midland surge, getting Anacoco to within 16 points heading into the final frame of regulation. The 6-9 center continued to pour it on early in the fourth, scoring all eight points during an 8-1 surge from Anacoco, which got the Indians to within nine points, 48-39. But with time quickly ticking away and Midland in a four-corners look, the Indians opted to foul to try to get a little closer. However, as badly as the Rebels had struggled from the foul line in the first three quarters, going 3-for-9, Midland went 8-of-10 over the final two minutes of play to seal the victory. Prejean led the way for the Rebels with 19 points, while Fontenot pitched in 11 points in the win. Vincent added nine points and Gantt finished with eight points. Along with Moss, Reese reached double figures for the Indians with 10 points, while Lenahan and McCrary rounded out the scoring with seven and six points, respectively. The Indians return to action on Tuesday with their District 4-2A opener against the Rosepine Eagles.
