Lady Pirates knock off Reeves; Leesville beats Tioga

Senior Chela Lack did the majority of the damage, but it was a late steal and go-ahead three-pointer from freshman Lauren Wellman that allowed the Hicks Lady Pirates to come away with 37-36 victory over the Reeves Lady Red Raiders in a District 6-C contest on Friday. With the win, the Lady Pirates improved to 7-24 overall, 1-1 in league play heading into a three-game district road stretch, which begins Tuesday with a visit to Elizabeth. Lack was the dominant force in the scoring department for the Lady Pirates as she netted 21 points in the victory. "Chela was a senior leader for us on the court, just like we knew she could be," Hicks head coach Courtney Fredieu said. With time running out and the Lady Pirates trailing by two points, 36-34, the left-handed Wellman drained a three-pointer to give Hicks the lead. With about 12 seconds left, Wellman also got a steal to give the Lady Pirates the final possession of the game and the subsequent win. Leesville.....36 Tioga......30 TIOGA — The Leesville Lady Cats remained atop the District 4-4A standings on Friday with a comeback win over the Tioga Lady Indians, 36-30. With the win, the Lady Cats are now 17-11 overall and a perfect 5-0 in district. The Lady Cats owned an 8-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, but saw Tioga come back to tie the game going into the halftime break, 14-14. The Lady Indians (13-13, 2-3) took the lead by the end of the third period of play, threatening to break Leesville's strangle hold atop the district standings. However, Leesville used a 15-7 surge over the final eight minutes of play to claim the victory. Junior Tiffany Wallace scored a game-high 17 points to lead Leesville, while Chelsea Martin added six points. TiAngela Byrd led Tioga with 11 points. The Lady Cats are idle Tuesday night, but return to district play on Friday as they visit the Alexandria Lady Trojans. Pickering.....74 Vinton.....25 VINTON — The Pickering Lady Red Devils got back on the winning track on Friday with a convincing 74-25 victory over the Vinton Lady Lions in District 4-2A action. Pickering (18-7, 6-3) took control early on, holding Vinton scoreless in the first quarter, opening up a 28-0 lead. The Lady Red Devils, who had 26 steals in the game, used a 15-11 advantage in the second period to take a 43-11 advantage into the locker room at the break. Over the final 16 minutes, the Lady Red Devils faced little resistance from Vinton as Pickering earned the easy win. Katherine Brinkley led the Lady Red Devils with 22 points, while Sami Thomas had 10 points. Senior Nastashia Webber had eight points, 10 assists and four steals, while Katie Haymon pitched in eight points. Melody Smith paced Vinton with 11 points. The Lady Red Devils are at home on Tuesday against Rosepine. Faith Training....41 Lighthouse.....32 ABBEVILLE — The Faith Training Christian Academy Lady Patriots continued their winning ways on Friday with a 41-32 victory over Lighthouse of Abbeville. Faith Training is now 15-1 on the season and will play at home Friday night against Highland Baptist of New Iberia. The Lady Patriots jumped out to a 17-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and took a 24-10 advantage into the intermission. A 12-7 edge by the Lady Patriots in the third gave FTCA a 36-17 lead going into the final eight minutes of play. Lighthouse used a 15-5 surge in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Lady Patriots. Kylee Williams led FTCA with 16 points, while Sara Reese and Kirstyn Jeane added nine and seven points, respectively. Emily Reese finished with four points and Feliciana Groves and Jordan Anderson got on the board with three and two points, respectively. Fairview.....85 Pitkin.....55 GRANT — The No. 1 Fairview Lady Panthers continued steamrolling through District 5-B play on Friday night with an 85-55 win over the Pitkin Lady Tigers. Fairview (35-2, 7-0) took on undefeated University, the top-ranked team in Class 2A, on Saturday at LSU's Pete Maravich Assembly Center in a Hall of Fame Classic. The Lady Panthers return to district play on Tuesday at Hornbeck. The Lady Tigers (15-16, 2-5) kept things close in the first period as Fairview owned a 22-15 lead after the first eight minutes of play. However, the Lady Panthers put together one of their patented runs in the second quarter, using a 26-9 surge to open up a 48-23 advantage at the break. A 21-4 run in the third quarter put the game out of reach as Fairview coasted in for the win. Brittany Maddox led the way for Fairview with 27 points, while Reagan Maricle contributed 19 points. Natosha Morvant added 14 points for the Lady Panthers. Karli West had 21 points to pace Pitkin, which plays at home Tuesday against Evans, while Amber McCallon came in with 10 points. Plainview....68 Elizabeth....38 ELIZABETH — The Plainview Lady Hornets won their sixth straight game on Friday with a 68-38 win over the Elizabeth Lady Bulldogs in a District 6-C showdown. Plainview (20-13, 2-0) opened with a 16-9 run and took a 29-22 lead into the halftime stoppage. However, the Lady Hornets came to life offensively in the third quarter, using a 29-12 run over the Lady Bulldogs (11-22, 0-2) to open up a 58-34 advantage going into the fourth. Skylar Chenevert led Plainview with 23 points, while Sammie Grissom and Breanne Webb added 15 points each. Elizabeth got 14 points from Karli Rea. The Lady Hornets take on Reeves on Tuesday, while Elizabeth hosts Hicks.
