Leesville graduate Maile Goodwin and Pickering graduate Sara Maricle were valuable members of their respective softball teams. But they were even more valuable in the classroom. Goodwin and Maricle were honored Saturday morning in Alexandria for being selected to the composite academic all-state team, which is chosen by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association. Goodwin, a first-team academic all-state pick in Class 4A as well, was an all-state selection as a utility player on last year’s Class 4A squad as chosen by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. She is a four-time all-district performer, including first-team at shortstop the past two seasons. In 2009, Goodwin batted .500 in district play and had a fielding percentage of .985. Maricle was a first-team academic all-stater in Class 2A. She played first base for the Lady Red Devils in 2009. Both graduated high school with perfect 4.0000 grade point averages. Maricle is expected to attend the University of Louisiana-Monroe on an academic scholarship, while Goodwin has yet to announce where she is going to college.
