Senior all-stater Breanna Poston did the damage offensively, while Nikki Manes and Shawna Boose shut down Singer standout Chance Cronce. That combined effort led to a 69-38 victory for the second-ranked Hornbeck Lady Hornets over the Singer Lady Hornets on Friday. With the win, Hornbeck improved to 34-4 on the season, 6-1 in District 5-B play heading into a mammoth showdown on Tuesday against top-ranked Fairview. Singer (17-15, 4-3) owned the early advantage in the game, jumping out to a 6-2 lead thanks to a bucket each from Cronce, Keya Morrison and Taryn Maddox. Hornbeck rallied to take the lead on a three-pointer each from Kendra Slaughter and Kaitlyn Fields, but a free throw from Maddox, a three-pointer by Morgan Eddleman and a short jumper from Morrison allowed Singer to open up a 12-8 lead with 3:12 to go in the first period, prompting a timeout from Hornbeck. Hornbeck got back-to-back baskets from Poston out of the timeout, but she picked up her second foul soon after, having to back to the bench. But Boose, who entered the game for Poston, got a bucket, while Fields also scored, allowing Hornbeck to take a 16-12 lead into the second period. The run continued for Hornbeck in the opening moments of the frame as Boose scored five more points, while Slaughter drained a three-pointer, giving Hornbeck a 24-12 lead. Poston returned to the court and drilled a three-pointer to extend the Hornbeck lead to 27-12, before Eddleman converted a three-point play with 2:11 to go in the first half, stopping Hornbeck's 19-0 run. Boose drained a short jumper to give Hornbeck a 31-15 lead, but a 7-2 Singer run allowed the Beauregard Parish version of the Lady Hornets to build a little momentum going into the intermission. Eddleman scored five of those points, including a three-pointer at the buzzer to get Singer to within nine, 31-22. Not pleased with her effort in the first half, Poston completely took over in the third period. Poston scored 14 of Hornbeck's 18 points in the third quarter, while Fields and Manes split the other four points. Also, Hornbeck turned it up defensively during the frame, limiting Singer to a free throw from Eddleman and a bucket in the post from Cronce. By the end of the third, Hornbeck owned a 49-25 advantage. Hornbeck continued to build on its lead during the fourth quarter, outscoring Singer, 20-13, in the frame. Hornbeck's largest lead was the margin of victory as Laken Baggs drained a long three-pointer just before the buzzer to secure the win. Poston led Hornbeck with 25 points and nine rebounds, while Boose had 15 points. Fields chipped in with 11 points and seven assists, while Slaughter added eight points and dished out nine assists. Eddleman paced Singer with 18 points, while Maddox finished with seven points. Singer will be back in Vernon Parish on Tuesday for a matchup against Simpson.
