Hornbeck, La. -

What a difference a few days makes. Just over two weeks ago, the Singer Hornets pulled out a 44-37 win in overtime against the Hornbeck Hornets. But Friday night, Hornbeck (19-14, 4-3) gained a measure of revenge on Singer (15-15, 4-3) with a 70-33 thumping in a District 5-B contest on Friday. Thanks to the win and a loss from Pitkin, Hornbeck forced a three-way tie for second place in the league with both Singer and the Tigers, three games behind district-leading Fairview. Hornbeck jumped out to a huge 16-2 lead early on, thanks in part to crisp ball movement, solid defense and good outside shooting from Matt Alford, who knocked down a couple of shots from downtown. Along with Alford's six points, senior Cody Wilson also scored six points in the first quarter for Hornbeck, which also got five points from Matthew Killian as it built a 20-7 lead. Hornbeck extended its lead to 28-7 early in the second period after a three-point play from Matt Alford, a three-pointer from Trevor Beverly and a bucket from Justin Alford. Singer responded with a 6-0 run, getting a three-pointer from Dillon Pickering, along with three points from Jordan Pickering. For the rest of the half, both Singer and Hornbeck traded baskets, with Hornbeck eventually taking a 36-19 advantage into the intermission. Hornbeck opened the second half on a 7-0 run, getting a three-pointer from Matt Alford and four points from Killian, building a 43-19 advantage before a bucket from Jordan Pickering stopped the surge. Singer, behind three points from Ramsey Pickering and a three-pointer by Jordan Pickering, got back to within 18 points, 45-27, but Wilson connected on a three-pointer and a shot in the lane to give Hornbeck a 23-point cushion going into the fourth period, 50-27. It was all Hornbeck over the final eight minutes as Trinity Harmon came in off the bench for five points, while Killian added four more points to help Hornbeck secure the win. Matt Alford led the way for Hornbeck with 18 points, while Wilson added 17 points and four assists. Killian contributed 13 points and five assists, while Justin Alford had a solid night with six points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Jordan Pickering paced Singer with 11 points, while Ramsey Pickering notched nine points. Cody Massie had seven points and Dillon Pickering chipped in with six points. Singer is on the road on Tuesday in district action against Simpson, while Hornbeck will host sixth-ranked Fairview.
