The Leesville Lady Cats opened the 2010 volleyball season in fine fashion on the road by sweeping past the Vinton Lady Lions, 25-17, 25-13, 25-23.
The Lady Cats are 1-0 on the season heading into a road matchup today against the Loyola Prep Lady Flyers.
First serve is set at 4:30 p.m. for the freshmen. Junior varsity action will follow at about 5:30 p.m., with varsity to take the court at around 6:30 p.m.
The Lady Cats opened the first set by jumping out to a huge lead as Felicia Graves was responsible for nine points on her serve alone.
In addition, senior Tiffany Wallace added five points on serve in the first set as the Lady Cats took the game by eight points, 25-17.
Wallace and Graves continued their strong play in the second set as Graves was responsible for eight points on serve and Wallace had seven as Leesville took a commanding 2-0 lead.
In the third and final set, the score was much closer as Leesville head coach Georgia Thomas freely substituted to get some of her more inexperienced players on the court.
Junior Amindai Mangok scored eight points on her serve during the third set, while Wallace added seven more as Leesville held off a valiant effort by Vinton to send it to a fourth set.
According to Thomas, the team played well even though captain Christina Jefferson played despite suffering from a high fever.
“Christina gutted it out and did a great job,” Thomas said. “The girls played well, but we still have a long way to go.”
