With setter and captain Christina Jefferson sidelined with strep throat, the Leesville Lady Cats fell in four sets to the Lady Flyers of Loyola College Prep on Thursday, 25-19, 25-18, 18-25, 25-19.
With the loss, the Lady Cats dropped to 1-1 on the season heading into action Tuesday at home against the Hamilton Christian Lady Warriors. First serve is at 4:30 p.m.
"Without Christina, we had to use a couple of others at setter," Leesville head coach Georgia Thomas said. "We used Chelsea Martin and Janeen Bonner at setter in the match."
The Lady Flyers took the first two sets by six and seven points before Leesville rallied in the third set to extend the match. However, Loyola sealed the victory by beating the Lady Cats in the fourth, 25-19.
Felicia Graves led the way for Leesville with 17 points scored on serve, while Tiffany Wallace had 16 points on serve. Bonner and Martin each added 13 points on their serve, while Ashlee Washington, who was unavailable on Tuesday, scored 12 points on her serve.
Tajai McCollum added 10 points on her serve.
Following Leesville home matchup on Tuesday against Hamilton Christian, the Lady Cats will close out the week with a Thursday home contest against Mansfield, before traveling to Carencro for a tournament on Saturday.
Thomas believes her team has the potential to be very good, but there is still work to be done.
"We are a work in progress," she said. "We have talent. We just need to work very hard in all phases of the game from passing to serving to defense. We need to work hard to get better."
