Tioga, La. —
When head coach Joe Saverino took over the Leesville soccer program just over a decade ago, the Lady Cats had never won a game.
Now, they are district champions.
The Lady Cats got a pair of goals from Anastasia Kalmykova, along with a goal and an assist from Haley Perry, in a 3-0 victory over the Tioga Lady Indians on Thursday night, claiming their first-ever district championship.
"Over the years, we just kept plugging away," Saverino said. "At first, we weren't winning any games. But we have just gotten better and better over the years and now we are district champions."
The Lady Cats (8-10-0, 5-1) technically share the district title with Alexandria, which also had a 5-1 league mark. However, since Leesville outscored the Lady Trojans in the two matches by an aggregate score of 2-1, the Lady Cats will represent the district in the playoffs as the first-place team.
Leesville took a 1-0 lead in the first half when Kalmykova scored her first goal of the game.
The second half saw Perry score for a 2-0 lead and Kalmykova notched her second goal of the game a little later, giving the Lady Cats a 3-0 victory.
Jordonne Johnson added an assist in the win for the Lady Cats, who will open the playoffs on Friday against an opponent yet to be determined.
The 24-team playoff bracket will be announced early this week.

The Leesville Wampus Cats closed out the district season with a 2-0 victory over the Tioga Indians, claiming second place in the league standings and the automatic playoff berth that goes along with it.
The Cats are now 6-8-2 overall and finished 4-2 in district, giving league champion Alexandria it's only close match, a 3-2 decision to the Trojans which went to penalty kicks.
Garrett Cline got the Wampus Cats on the board in the first half with an unassisted goal. Leesville took that 1-0 lead into the halftime intermission.
The second half saw Leesville dominate, adding to the margin with another unassisted goal, this one from Jakob Lopez.
The Wampus Cats will find out who they will face in the playoffs later this week, likely having to go on the road for a Saturday contest, as the 24-team playoff bracket has yet to be determined.
