The Leesville Lady Cat volleyball team has been one of the most consistent programs at LHS over the past few years, reaching the playoffs in each of the last three seasons under head coach Georgia Thomas.
On Tuesday, Thomas and the Lady Cats went to work in an effort to reach the playoffs for the fourth straight year as preseason practice got underway.
With three returning starters and several others who got playing time a year ago, the Lady Cats are not only aiming for a return to the playoffs, but also winning a district title, something that has never been done in the history of the program.
The Lady Cats lost three starters — Hannah Honeycutt, Martia Pelmore and Shamyla Hawkins — to graduation, along with two key reserves in Morgan Albert and Delmelia Craft.
However, juniors Chelsea Martin and Christina Jefferson, along with senior Janeen Bonner, are back to help lead the way.
Ashlee Washington is also back and should see increased time on the court, while several other players are vying for the opportunity on the court for the Lady Cats.
The Lady Cats have a scrimmage in Mansfield on Saturday and will have their own scrimmage at LHS on Aug. 21. The following Saturday, the Lady Cats return to Mansfield for a jamboree, concluding preseason workouts.
The Lady Cats' first two matches are on the road, with the first home contest coming Sept. 7 against Hamilton Christian. Leesville will also play Mansfield, Loyola Prep, Evangel and Vinton at home during the season, while taking to the road against the same teams.
Leesville will play in its first tournament on Sept. 11 at Carencro. A week later, the Lady Cats journey to Crowley for another tournament. The Lady Cats will host a tournament on Oct. 2, while going on the road to New Iberia for one on Oct. 16.
District play opens on the road Sept. 28 as the Lady Cats take on Beau Chene. The district home opener follows two days later against heated rival Sam Houston, a team Leesville has never beaten.
The Lady Cats also have home and home district games against Opelousas and LaGrange.
Leesville came in second in the district to Sam Houston a year ago, scoring six easy sweeps of LaGrange, Opelousas and Beau Chene. The Lady Cats reached the playoffs, falling on the road to Pearl River in a five-set marathon in the first round.
