Two of the three men who beat and robbed an eldery woman in 2008 were sentenced last month to 30 years hard labor in the Louisiana Department of Corrections, said Vernon Parish District Attorney Asa Skinner.
The third man received a 15-year sentence. Douglas Cody Sneed, 25, Leland Shad Singletary, 24, and Thomas Daniel Edwards, 30, all pleaded guilty to armed robbery, attempted armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery last September. In addition, Sneed pleaded guilty to the charges of possession of a schedule IV controlled substance and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
"The office was pleased that there was justice for the elderly victim who lives in a remote area of the parish," said prosecutor Ronald Seastrunk.
The victim, who sustained serious injury in the attack, would have testified in the trial if the trio had not pleaded guilty.
Edwards, too, had turned state's witness and was prepared to testify, but in the end, first Singletary and then Sneed pleaded guilty. Sneed entered his plea on Sept. 14, 2009, just after five of the 12 jurors had been selected for his trial, Seastrunk said.
The sentencing took place on Dec. 22, 2009.
Thirtieth Judicial Court Judge John Ford sentenced Sneed to two 25-year terms at hard labor each for the charges of attempted robbery and criminal conspiracy to commit armed robbery. The periods are to run concurrently. In addition, Sneed received five more years because of the firearm. That term is to run consecutively. In all, Sneed will serve 30 years in prison at hard labor without benefit of parole, probation or suspension of sentence, said Seastrunk.
Ford sentenced Singletary to one 25-year term on the count of armed robbery with a firearm, with an additional five years for the firearm. The two terms will run consecutively so that Singletary will serve a total of 30 years in prison at hard labor without benefit of parole, probation or suspension of sentence.
Edwards was sentenced to serve 15 years at hard labor for one count of armed robbery. He too will serve without benefit of parole, probation or suspension of sentence.
On September 20, 2008 at about 10 p.m., two of the men entered the victim's home while the third remained outside waiting in a vehicle, according to the original report from the Vernon Parish Sheriff's Office.
“When deputies and detectives arrived at the scene, they were advised by the 63-year-old female victim that two armed male subjects had forced their way into her home and demanded money,” said Sheriff Sam Craft.
One of the subjects also struck the victim several times with a long gun.
The victim was later treated at Byrd Regional Hospital for moderate to severe injuries to her head and body.
