Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital’s Ophthalmology Clinic offers cataract evaluation to all military retirees and their family members with TRICARE benefits, regardless of age, are eligible for this check.
If patients have been told they have cataracts and are experiencing increasing difficulty with reading, driving, watching TV, seeing objects in a distance or glare from bright lights, they should contact the clinic. BJACH’s Ophthalmology Clinic conducts cataract
evaluations to determine if patients are a candidate for cataract surgery. A referral is not needed to be screened.
Benefits of having cataract surgery at BJACH include consideration for a “premium” lens implant at the time of surgery, including an
implant that corrects for astigmatism or a multifocal distance and near vision correcting implant. These premium implants normally can range from $900 to $2,000 per eye, out-of-pocket, when done in the civilian sector because the premium implants are not covered by insurance, including Medicare. BJACH’s Ophthalmology Clinic is able to provide this special service, free of charge, if patients are a good surgical candidate as determined by the ophthalmologist.
Benefits also include the consolidation of care and medical records if patients are currently being seen or treated in the Department of Defense Health Care System. Care is provided by trained and friendly staff in a familiar military setting.
To set up a screening appointment, call the Ophthalmology Clinic at (337) 531-3276. The clinic also has a walk-in clinic the first and second Thursday of each month from 1-4 p.m.
