Burrell Ravon Harvey was born on the 27th day of March, 1925 in Evans, the son of Burrell and Ellie Hinson Harvey.  He went to be with the Lord on Friday, Nov. 28, 2008 at Rapides Hospital in Alexandria at the age of 83 years, 8 months and 28 days.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He dedicated his life ensuring that Pitkin High School and his community would have the best education, faculty and resources possible to provide a good education for their children.  Further, he was a loyal and faithful member of Gravel Hill Baptist Church in Cravens.

Mr. Harvey began his service to Pitkin High School in 1950 and this continued for over 56 years. He spent over 30 years at Pitkin High School teaching, coaching and serving as principal and athletic director.  He built the program into the success it is today, with the school winning the high school state championship in 1966 with a record of 54 wins and only 4 losses that year.

He retired from the school in 1980 and planned to live a quiet contented life with his wife spending time gardening and watching the Tigers from the sidelines. Anyone who knew B. R. would tell you he could never sit idly by.  He soon found himself mentoring other coaches, players, often with inspirational talks during halftime and practice. He has served as leader, advisor and mentor to many coaches and community leaders in the community and state.

Mr. Harvey was inducted into the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Coaches Hall of Fame in January 1995 with a winning record of 445 wins and only 140 defeats, the first person from Vernon Parish to have this honor. Mr. Harvey was one of very few to be inducted as both a coach and an administrator. He served on the executive board of this association for many years.

He was elected to the Vernon Parish school board in 1984 and served in that capacity until his retirement on March 2, 2006. During his tenure with the Vernon Parish School Board he served as vice president in 1985 and president in 1986.  Members of the board serving with him during his tenure often remarked that when Mr. Harvey spoke all would listen.  He was a man who knew when to speak and when to listen and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Mr. Harvey is survived by his wife of 61 years, Maggie Harvey of Pitkin; three daughters, Rayetta (Monroe “Bo”) Thompson; Alexandria, Jean (Ernest) Farabee of Shreveport and Landa (James) Johnson of Cravens; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services are under the direction of the Labby Memorial Funeral Home in Leesville.
