The Simpson Lady Broncos have played most of the season with an eight-player rotation. But with senior Katelynn Martin out with a knee injury, the Lady Broncos had to play the second-ranked Hornbeck Lady Hornets with a seven-player rotation. And by the end of the game, it started taking its toll as Hornbeck pulled away in the end for a 76-51 triumph in a District 5-B contest on Friday. Hornbeck (32-4, 4-1) had some issues with depth as well, having lost senior back-up guard Shana Lee to a season-ending knee injury, while Stormie Pollock was out of the lineup with an injured arm. But that didn't stop Hornbeck from getting the win. The Lady Broncos scored right off the opening tip as freshman Mackenzie Kelly drove to the lane for a successful layup. A little later, following a bucket from Hornbeck all-stater Breanna Poston, Lexie West scored to give Simpson a 4-2 lead. Baskets from Haley Baggs and Nikki Manes gave Hornbeck its first lead at 6-4, but Kelly drained a pair of free throws to tie it up. Hornbeck took control thanks to a three-pointer each from Kendra Slaughter and Kaitlyn Fields, prompting a quick timeout from the Simpson bench. Kelly drilled two more free throws to get Simpson back to within four, but the Lady Hornets answered with an 8-0 run, getting two baskets from Slaughter, two free throws from Baggs and a bucket from Poston for a 20-8 advantage. The Lady Broncos got another bucket from Kelly, but a basket from junior Shawna Boose near the end of the frame gave Hornbeck a 22-10 lead, an advantage the Lady Hornets took into the second period. Simpson cut the Hornbeck lead to 10 points a couple of times early in the frame, but a 7-0 run a little later allowed the Lady Hornets to take a 34-16 lead. Eventually, thanks to some solid play from Taylor Ellzey and Britney Fulks, the Lady Broncos cut that 18-point advantage to 12 points, only to see Fields drill a three-pointer to give Hornbeck a 43-28 lead at the intermission. The third period saw the Lady Hornets, who stretched their lead to 21 points at one time, get a pair of three-pointers from Poston, who scored 10 points in the frame. However, Simpson rallied late in the third as West, Kelly and Alexis Thompson all scored, cutting the Hornbeck lead to 56-42 entering the fourth period. The lead stayed at 14 points until Hornbeck went on a 15-0 run, sparked by seven points from Caitlyn Gentry as the Lady Hornets opened up a 74-45 lead. Simpson got no closer than 25 the rest of the way as Hornbeck got the win. Poston led the Lady Hornets with 22 points, while Baggs and Fields were in double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Gentry added nine points, while Slaughter and Laken Baggs chipped in with seven points each. Kelly registered a career-high 24 points to lead the Lady Broncos, while Fulks finished with nine points. Hornbeck is on the road in District 5-B play on Tuesday against Pitkin, while Simpson stays home and faces the top-ranked Fairview Lady Panthers.
