Junior Caitlyn Gentry connected on a two-run homer, while Tori Prell struck out nine batters as the Hornbeck Lady Hornets throttled the homestanding Negreet Lady Indians on Thursday, 13-2.
With the victory, the Lady Hornets improved to 1-1 overall. They will open District 5-B play at 4:30 p.m. Monday at home against Singer.
Prell gave up two runs on nine hits with nine strikeouts and no walks, while also going 2-for-4 at the plate.
Gentry finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with the homer and two RBIs, while Nikki Manes had three hits and three RBIs. Belle Manes contributed a hit and two RBIs, while Haley Brister had a hit and an RBI.


SIMPSON — Junior catcher Taylor Ellzey smacked a one-out, two-run, walkoff homer in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Simpson Lady Broncos to a 5-4 victory over the Merryville Lady Panthers on Thursday.
Simpson is now 3-0 on the season heading into the ASH Tournament, where it will face DeQuincy, Logansport, St. Edmund and Grace Christian.
The Lady Broncos trailed 4-0 after the first four innings before putting together a rally.
Simpson scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to get to within a run, but went scoreless in the sixth, setting the stage for the dramatic finish.
Stephanie Averitt lined out to open the seventh, but LeAnn Bennett followed with a double. Ellzey followed with the two-run blast to secure the victory.
Bennett (2-0) earned the win in the circle for the Lady Broncos, giving up just one hit and no runs in pitching the final three innings.
Mackenzie Kelly started the game, working four innings. She surrendered four runs on eight hits with one strikeout and two walks.
Bennett and Kelly were both 2-for-3 at the plate, while Ellzey was 2-for-4, including the two-run bomb. Averitt, Miranda Underwood and Megan Keller each added a hit in the contest.


DeRIDDER — The Leesville Lady Cats surrendered three unearned runs Thursday night, falling to rival DeRidder in non-district softball action, 3-0.
With the loss, the Lady Cats are now 4-4 entering action this weekend at the Alexandria Senior High Tournament.
Jamie Wentzel earned the win in the circle for DeRidder, giving up no runs on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks.
McKenna Goodwin suffered the loss, giving up three unearned runs on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks.
Offensively, the Lady Cats got hits from Emily Berry, Chelsi Alexander, Karsen Kreps, Brittany Hillard and Ashley Hoecker.


ANACOCO — The Anacoco Lady Indians lost for the first time this season on Thursday, falling to the Zwolle Lady Hawks, 9-6.
Anacoco is now 5-1 on the season heading into action this weekend at the Grant Tournament, where the Lady Indians will face Grant on Friday and Breaux Bridge and Bunkie on Saturday.
