The Leesville Lady Cats, Pitkin Lady Tigers, Hornbeck Lady Hornets and Simpson Lady Broncos all opened the playoffs on a good note Monday evening, each advancing to the second round of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association softball playoffs.
The Lady Cats (16-13) reached the second round of the Class 4A playoffs with a hard-fought win over St. Michael, 4-3. Leesville, the No. 12 seed, jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings and held off a furious rally by the Lady Warriors, the No. 21 seed.
Leesville will go on the road for a third straight year in the second round of the playoffs, playing either fifth-ranked West Ouachita or No. 28 seed Morgan City.
No. 4 Pitkin (16-9-1) had little trouble disposing of Bell City in the first round of the Class B bracket, 15-0.
Hornbeck (17-6-1) and Simpson (21-7) also had easy first round Class B outings in wins over Centerville and Simsboro, respectively.
The Lady Hornets won in six innings over Centerville, 16-6, while Simpson needed just three innings to handle Simsboro, 16-1.
All three of the Class B teams in Vernon Parish could play at home in the second round, depending upon results from the games on the other side of the bracket.
