By a unanimous vote, current Vernon Parish School District Transportation Director James Williams was named the next superintendent of the Vernon Parish School District, effective July 1, 2014, at Thursday's Vernon Parish School Board meeting.
Williams will replace Jackie Self, who indicated in October that he would be retiring at the expiration of his current contract.
Board member Jerry Jeane (district two) was absent for the meeting.
During a five-minute presentation to the board during Thursday's meeting, Williams spoke on three key points which he felt were significant: pride, cooperation, and determination. Pride, he said, not only referenced to self-pride, but also the pride local communities take in their schools, and of the system as a whole. He also referenced to how many products of the Vernon Parish School District are proud to be such.
"Not only have I been an employee of this system for many years, I was also a student," he said. "We're all a product of a very proud…system here," Williams said.
Williams said that the Vernon Parish School Board has had a history of open communication and collaboration, and he would hope to keep that moving forward, in order to "take action that's best for the kids, number one, and our school system, number two.
"Let's keep this open communication, let's keep this collaboration, because when it's all said and done, this board, and this superintendent's office, have been able to put everything else aside, and make decisions that have been best for the children of this parish," he said.
He referenced determination because he said that while the district has "a whole lot of things that are pretty good," they need to continue to work hard, as hard work and dedication were things that got the district to where it is currently.
Also at Thursday's meeting, Michael Perkins (district five) was elected president of the Vernon Parish School Board for 2014, with Doug Brandon (district one) being elected vice president.
The district also approved four resolutions concerning bonds; one for the preliminary approval of the issuance of $3.125 million in general obligation school refunding bonds of Orange School District 145, and $1.38 million in general obligation school refunding bonds of Ward Eight Wardwide School School District; one for the reduction of interest rates on a bond for the Pickering School District; and a resolution providing for the canvassing of returns and declaring the results of the special elections held in Vernon Parish on Nov. 16.
