SHREVEPORT — The annual Louisiana High School Coaches Association all-star doubleheader will be taking place at Hirsch Coliseum in Shreveport on Saturday, March 21.

And two local players are expected to be participating in the girls’ version of the contest, which tips off at 1 p.m.

Twins Ashley and Amy McKellar, seniors at Pickering, were selected by the coaches to compete in the annual event, while Pickering teammate Ashley Sheppard will serve as an alternate, just in case someone drops out.

The McKellar twins played a huge role in the Lady Red Devils’ success this year, which included a 14-0 record in District 3-2A play, along with their subsequent march to the Class 2A state finals, where they dropped a hard-fought decision to North Caddo, 55-49.

Ashley McKellar was recently voted the District 3-2A Most Valuable Player as she averaged 14 points, two rebounds and two assists per game. She is known for her solid shooting from three-point territory, along with her aggressive, in-your-face style of defense.

Amy McKellar was also a first-team all-district pick in 3-2A, averaging seven points, five assists and two steals per outing. With the ability to penetrate to the goal, she helped lead the Lady Red Devils to the state finals, being the only Pickering player to score in double figures in both games at the Ladies Top 28.

Sheppard averaged 12 points per game en route to winning first-team all-district honors, along with two rebounds per outing.

The McKellar twins will join forces with the likes of Stanley all-stater Sara Housley, Plainview standout Kelli Crager and the Sam Houston duo of Samantha Logan and Abby Jolie on the West All-Star team, which will be coached by Plain Dealing’s Shelia Dupree and Mansfield’s Kendra Neal.

The East All-Star team will feature Baylor signee Kalani Brown of Salmen. Brown is the daughter of former NBA standout P.J. Brown, who prepped at Winnfield High School.

Following the girls’ all-star game, the boys will take to the court at 3 p.m. No Vernon Parish player is on the team, but Elizabeth’s Colby Lafauci will be on the West team, where his coach, Leslie Maddox, is serving as the head coach.
