Many in Beauregard, Vernon parishes walk tight budget line

According to the Louisiana Association of United Ways report released last week, a family of four in Beauregard Parish needs annual income of $41,677 to meet bare-minium household needs. In Vernon Parish, that figure is $43,680.

According to United Way, 37 per cent of the households in Beauregard are struggling to afford basic needs. In Vernon, the number is 40 per cent.

Breaking the numbers down, in DeRidder 42 per cent of the total 3,912 households are below the poverty line or are above it but Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed.

Other communities outlined in the report include Longville, 26 per cent; Merryville, 60 per cent; Oretta, 53 per cent and Singer, 14 per cent.

The median household income in the parish is $46,924, compared to the average median per parish of $44,164. Median is the point at which half are above and half are below.

According to the report, a 40-hour hourly wage of $20.84 is necessary to keep a family of four at household survival budget level in Beauregard; $8.68 hourly is necessary for a single person household.

In Vernon, Leesville has 2,501 households, with almost half -- 46 per cent -- below the poverty line or above it but ALICE designated.

Other communities outline in the report include Anacoco, 38 per cent; Fort Polk North, 31 per cent; Fort Polk South, 40 per cent; Hornbeck, 39 per cent; New Llano, 47 per cent; Pitkin, 53 per cent; Rosepine, 52 per cent; and Simpson, 17 per cent.

In Beauregard, Singer had the fewest number of residents below the poverty line -- zero -- according to the report and Oretta had the highest percentage -- 47 per cent. Singer had 14 per cent of households ranked as Alice, and Oretta had 7 per cent in that category.

In Vernon, North Fort Polk' poverty rate of 9 percent of households was the parish's lowest, and Leesville's 20 per cent the highest.
