Two traffic circles are coming to Vernon Parish, according to Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) engineers.
Jonathan Lanchney, Assistant District Administrator of Engineering (Alexandria), announced to Vernon Parish Chamber members at Wednesday’s luncheon, that a traffic circle will be coming to LA-184 (Chaffee Road) near the Vernon Parish Correctional Facility. “With every project there is resistance. We want to do what is best for the public,” he said.
A second traffic circle, with three entrances, is in the plans for the intersection of LA-171 and Boone Street.
Joshua Harrouch, DOTD Traffic Engineer Development Administrator, explained that there are quite a few reasons to install a traffic circle rather than a traffic light. A circle will cut down on vehicle accidents, costs for bulb replacement and electric bills, he said. Traffic circles slow down traffic while also keeping the flow moving, whereas a light creates a delay.
This kind of project usually takes between 12 and 14 months to complete, said Lanchney. Specific start and end date approximations will be released as they become available.
