Gregg Lewis of Leesville was arrested Monday for second degree attempted murder by the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Department (VPSO).

Lewis allegedly beat Tekema Moore on Sunday with a lead pipe.

She was taken to the hospital on Sunday with several serious injuries to her head and body. Hospital officials notified VPSO of Moore’s condition.

“(Moore) had multiple injuries, including a significant head injury,” and that she had been attacked,” VPSO Detective Rhonda Jordan said.

The incident took place at Country Manor Apartments near Highway 10 in Leesville when Moore carried trash to a nearby dumpster with her service dog.

A friend at Moore’s apartment at the time claimed the service dog returned without Moore. When the friend stepped out of the apartment she saw Moore lying in the street with visible injuries.

VPSO detectives obtained a search warrant after witnesses identified Lewis as the alleged assailant.

While searching his apartment detectives spoke with a woman and child who were in the apartment. She told detectives Lewis was not there.

After escorting the woman and child out of the apartment, Lewis was discovered to be hiding in the attic.

VPSO deployed gas canisters in the attic when he refused to surrender.

Approximately 10 minutes later, Lewis surrendered to VPSO.

He was arrested and questioned about the violent incident to which he admitted beating Moore about the head and body with the pipe.

VPSO also interviewed witnesses who claimed the conflict between Lewis and Moore began a month ago when Moore’s service dog got into a fight with Lewis’ dog. Lewis’ dog was killed in the fight. Since then, he has allegedly made several threats against Moore’s life.

Moore is still receiving treatment for her injuries.

Lewis is currently in VPSO jail. His bond has been set at $200,000 by Judge Anthony Eaves.
