In order to cater to the growing number of golf members, the Leesville Municipal Golf Course has brought in a new fleet of golf carts.

The new carts will allow several members and visitors to use their own cart while playing a round on the greens, without having to wait or make due by walking from one hole to another.

With the new addition, the golf course will be able to hold larger scale events, catering to groups of up to 50 players.

This will allow an entire party to drive from one hole to the next on the course, without having to sacrifice precious time during their games.

The carts could not have come at a better time, as the 9th Annual Thad Bailes 4-H Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament will be held at the Leesville Municipal Golf Course this year on Saturday, September 15.

The event will act as a fundraiser for the Vernon Parish 4-H Scholarship fund, which will be used in recognition of graduating 4-H seniors.

The fundraiser is named after Thad Bailes, an avid member and supporter of the Vernon Parish 4-H club and an advisory committee member from 1993 - 2003.

He helped to establish and act as president of the Livestock Club for parents and youth during his time with the organization.

In honor of his name, the club put together this event as a means of providing financial aid and scholarships to 4-H students.

All of the funds will help graduating seniors to attend a university or trade school of their choice, honoring the legacy of Bailes as students continue to do good work in his name.

“Well, normally the tournament would be held at the Warrior Hills Golf Course at Fort Polk, but this year we decided to move it to the Leesville Golf Course in light of all the improvements that they’ve been making,” Tournament Chair Ray Ortiz said. “They’ve done a terrific job over the past several years, and this is a great way to bring the community together.

“The fundraiser supports the students of Vernon Parish while the City of Leesville gains support from the improvements made to the golf course, so it’s a great way for everyone to come together for a beautiful day.”

Registration will be held at 8 a.m. on September 15, with a $50 entrance fee for individual players and a $200 fee for teams.

The fee pays for the players lunch, the green fee, golf cart and the door prize available to all players.

“Everyone is able to win a door prize, we’re going to have lots of opportunities for players at this tournament,” Ortiz added.

The tournament will have a shotgun start at 9 a.m. and will run as a traditional 18 hole course, which will give players the opportunity to learn the greens as they work their way up and down the course.

The Vernon Parish 4-H Club welcomes any corporate sponsors willing to support the tournament.

All corporate sponsors will receive media coverage and will be listed on all printed materials used to promote the tournament.
