The Leesville community loves and supports its veterans, and that was never more true than this past weekend. There were many celebrations and events honoring those who have protected, and currently, protect, our country from threats both foreign and domestic.
Sunshine Center Apartments celebrated their veterans during a special program on Friday. Detective Jerry Twymen of the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office (VPSO) was on hand to give out special plaques to residents who have served in the military or had a spouse that served in the military.
“We appreciate all veterans for their service,” said Twymen. “It’s an honor for me to do this.”
After the awards were handed out it was time for lunch as those in attendance were treated to hot dogs.
Melissa Wingate is one of the individuals that work at Sunshine Center and served as the “MC” of the event.
Wingate stated that the program was put on to show members of the military and their spouses in their community that they were appreciated.
“We all wanted to show all of our people who are veterans that we thank them for their service,” Wingate said. “We also wanted to honor those military spouses who had to make sacrifices as well here at home.”
Wingate expressed that she would like to do more fun programs for the residents at Sunshine Center.
“We love all of our people here. We are trying to reach out to the community to let the people know that we are here, and we do whatever we can for the good of our residents.” Wingate said.
