Dr. Granger was first elected to the coroner position on July 28, 2006. As a coroner, he manages the medicolegal death investigations for Vernon Parish. He does this with the assistance of deputy coroners while working in conjunction with the Sheriff’s office and Leesville Police Department.

In addition to the responsibilities of the coroner's office, Dr. Granger is also responsible for any psychiatric committals that may need to be done to protect public safety.

He participates in hearings to determine an individual's sanity as assigned by the court.
As chief medical officer for the Parish, he is also responsible for the coordination of sexual assault investigations.

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner's (SANE) Nurses, perform the medical portion of sexual assault investigations in Vernon Parish, and his office supports their training for the betterment of our community.

Dr. Granger explains that the coroner’s office has partnered with the National Cribs for Kids program to provide Safe Sleep education and discourage parents, grandparents, and other caretakers, from sleeping with their infant to avoid overlay death and reduce the infant mortality rate.

His proudest accomplishment to date has been that he has been able to hire very well trained team members for his department as deputy coroners, SANE nurses, physicians and additional personnel to provide a safe healthy environment for our parish and community.

One thing that Dr. Granger says he would do differently is he would consider further efforts to better fund the coroner’s office as it remains an unfunded statutory obligation from the police jury general fund.

Any and all efforts to improve funding for equipment, salaries, and training, thru the state legislature would be appreciated.

The biggest obstacle he faces in his profession is that Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) shows fail to provide an accurate picture of the slow speed at which investigative work and results actually progress. Unfortunately, we can’t solve real-life crimes in an hour episode.

Finally, we asked Dr. Granger what is something people would be surprised to learn about him. He shared with us that he is an avid duck hunter who spends a lot of time in Creole, LA.
