The first order of business at their inaugural meeting was for Terry Courville, the President of the Louisiana State Council Vietnam Veterans of America, to proudly announce the issuance of their chapter number of the Vietnam Veterans Association of America chapter in DeRidder. The announcement was immediately followed by the installation of the chapter officers.
On hand to install the new officers was Chapter #852 out of Baton Rouge President, Joe Jenkins. Being installed were Elvin “Doc” Holliday as President, Charles Allen as Vice President, Carroll Green as Treasurer, Ronnie Jackson as Secretary and Kenneth Gibson as Chaplain.
Additionally, the new chapter appointed the following board members: Richard Maattalla, Frank Hensley, Ronald Cooley, Kenneth Gibson and James Baker.
There was a good turnout with a total of 44 members were present at the initial meeting.
The new chapter received their first donation to get things going, on behalf of Chapter #215 chapter president Perry Lopez presented $100.00.
Their final act of official business was to vote on a chapter name. Holliday said that both Beauregard and Vernon Parishes suffered casualties in Vietnam and he suggested naming the chapter Beauregard Vernon Memorial Chapter #1138 of the Vietnam Veterans Association of America. All members in attendance unanimously voted to approve the new name.
