For what is believed to be the first time in Vernon Parish history two schools have won state championships in the same season, for the same sport, in the same district.
Athletes from both of these history making teams visited the Vernon Parish Police Jury Regular Meeting held Monday where they were congratulated and presented with Certificates of Recognition by District six Representative Jerry Blair.
In what was described as standing room only students filled the police jury gallery and lined the walls on both sides.
Blair welcomed both teams and their coaches before presenting the certificates.
The Simpson Broncos boys basketball team won the 2019 Class C State Championship for the first time in the schools history with a regular season record of 39-2.
The Hicks Lady Pirates finished their regular season with a record of 35-8 before going on to become the 2019 State Class B Basketball Champions.
The last time the Hicks Lady Pirates won the state championship was in 1997.
