The Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office has announced that an inmate who attempted to escape was subsequently recaptured.

Larry Michael Phillips, of Anacoco, walked away from his work detail at the Leesville City Yard on Monday.

All available law enforcement worked together to canvas the area once his absence was noticed.

A complete sweep of the area eventually resulted in Phillips being found and recaptured later in the day.

Phillips was found by authorities hiding underneath a historic home at the corner of Martin Luther King St. and Highway 171 South.

He surrendered immediately and was arrested without incident. He has since been returned to prison, and has been charged with one count of simple escape.

He now potentially faces a year in prison as a result of his escape attempt. As of this writing, Phillips remains in the VPSO jail.
