Unity Baptist Church is set to have a special visitor on Saturday, September 21. Jamaica David will be visiting the church and speaking about how Operation Christmas Child helped inspire her faith in God.
David grew up in Guyana, South America. During her childhood her father was often away looking for work. He would have to work in other countries just to provide for their family. Her mother struggled to make ends meet during his absence.
On one fateful day, David received a surprise that would begin her lifelong journey in Christianity. She received a shoebox full of gifts and items that she needed from Operation Christmas Child.
That act of generosity inspired David to learn more about God and to teach others as well. David now teaches shoebox recipients more about christianity, and just where those gift boxes came from.
Known by many as “the shoe box ministry,” Operation Christmas Child is a charity event where millions of shoe boxes are loaded with gifts such as school supplies, hygiene items, notes of encouragement, and fun toys to be delivered to children in need around the globe. Boxes also contain The Bible translated into the child’s native language.
In 2017, there were 11.4 million shoe boxes delivered in over 100 countries. Boxes collected locally will be taken to the Lake Charles collection centers, where they are loaded and taken to processing centers. From their they will be shipped to children in need all around the world.
Operation Christmas Child is a ministry of Samaritan’s Purse.
Samaritan's Purse is a non-denominational evangelical Christian organization providing spiritual and physical aid to people around the world.
Since 1970, Samaritan's Purse has helped meet the needs of people who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine. It is their belief that through these acts of charity they can show the love that Jesus Christ has for all mankind.
There are 5,000 Operation Christmas Child drop-off locations nationwide and thousands of volunteers each year work to ensure that children around the world receive Christmas gifts.
