The Fort Polk Directorate of Public Works wants motorists and pedestrians on the installation to be alert to the following operations taking place during the next couple of months:
• Mississippi Avenue tree felling operations
Tree removal operations at bldg 2044 along Mississippi Avenue (between 15th and 16th streets) is scheduled to start Oct. 15 and be complete by Oct. 18. Traffic along this segment of Mississippi Avenue will be stopped intermittently while tree felling is occurring and will not exceed 5 minutes at a time. Pedestrians and motorists should exercise caution around the areas of the work site and should be aware of construction equipment movements, workers and other motorists.
• Louisiana Avenue road repairs
Louisiana Avenue road construction (Visitor Control Center to La. Hwy 467) is underway. Phase 1 is anticipated to be complete by Oct. 15. The primary work for phase 1 is to repair base failures along this segment of the road. The contractor will be required to place one-lane closures at multiple locations. Motorists should expect aggregate travel surfaces at the locations the contractor has executed base failure repairs, and should be aware of construction crews and equipment adjacent to the travel ways. ACP 1 (Entrance Road) will remain open for both inbound and outbound traffic for phase 1, but alternate routes are encouraged to minimize delays and traffic congestion at these sites.
• Phase 2 is projected to begin Oct. 16 and end Oct. 25. This phase will require base failure repairs along the outbound lane of ACP1, which will require a closure of outbound traffic only at ACP 1. The anticipated closure duration is currently planned for the duration of phase 2. ACP 2 and ACP 5 (North La. Hwy 467 and South La. Hwy 467) hours will be extended for outbound traffic only from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. during the closure period. Additionally, ACP 4 (Louisiana Avenue East gate) will be open for outbound traffic only from 4-6 p.m. (Monday through Friday) for the duration of the Louisiana Avenue road repair project. The current estimated completion for this four-phase effort is Nov. 27.
• Colorado Avenue Sidewalk
Construction of a new sidewalk adjacent to Colorado Avenue from Louisiana Avenue to the Main Post Exchange begins today and is projected through December. This project includes the construction of a new sidewalk and several new pedestrian crosswalks. Pedestrians and motorists should expect construction crews and equipment operating adjacent to the travel way with possible temporary single lane closures. Colorado Avenue will remain open to traffic as Fort Polk executes this improvement.
• Mississippi Avenue Repairs
The contract to repair Mississippi Avenue from Louisiana Avenue to La. Hwy 10 was awarded Sept. 18. Work requirements include concrete repairs, base failure repairs, milling the asphalt and repaving with a new asphalt overlay and new pavement markings. This project will require the contractor to place one-lane closures at multiple locations along Mississippi Avenue to execute the concrete and base failure repairs. Motorists should expect aggregate travel surfaces at the locations the contractor has executed base failure repairs and should be aware of construction crews and equipment adjacent to travel ways. Mississippi Avenue will remain open to traffic, but alternate routes are encouraged to minimize delays and traffic congestion at these sites. Work is anticipated to begin in November following the phase 2 efforts along Louisiana Avenue. Updates will be provided as plans are refined and adjusted.
