PICKERING – It was not pretty the entire the contest, but Pickering hit enough shots late to pick up the district win.

The Lady Devils defeated Oakdale 32-29 Tuesday night at Pickering High School.

"I told them that if we don't block out and do the little things, we don't win the game," Pickering head coach Morgan Spears said.

"I knew we could win, but we didn't play like we normally play. It wasn't as intense as it usually is. I don't know if it was the pace or the early foul trouble we got in to."

Lauren Mayberry led Pickering with 18 points, including three 3-pointers.

"She hit some big shots," Spears said. "A lot of people don't think post players can shoot, but she has the green light."

Oakdale led 23-22 heading into the final quarter, but a 3-pointer from Mayberry gave Pickering a 26-23 lead with 5:40 to play.

The Lady Devils extended its lead to 31-25 after a long 2-pointer from the corner from Alexus Hood, followed by a layup by Meadow Boycher.

With time winding down, Mykia Freeney hit two shots from the free throw line to ice the game.

"When she hit those two clutch free throws, it really put us ahead and put the game away" Spears said.

The win puts Pickering at 5-21 overall and 2-3 in district play with five games to go.

"I would really like to make the playoffs," Spears said. "That would be great, and I want to win more games than last year.

"I'm starting to see things on the court that we've been practicing. To me, those are wins."
