Dixie Gem Peach, Atchafalaya win Night 1 preliminaries in Miss Louisiana competition
Miss Dixie Gem Peach Monica Whitman and Miss Atchafalaya McKenzie Connelly won preliminaries on the first evening of competition for the Miss Louisiana title.
Whitman won eveningwear, and Connelly won talent performing "Der Hölle Rache" or the Queen of the Night aria by Mozart.
The pageant is underway in Monroe this week with 30 young women vying for the 2021 crown.
Miss Louisiana 2020 Courtney Hammons was crowned last year without a pageant because the event was canceled in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The second round of preliminaries will be 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Monroe Civic Center’s W.L. “Jack” Howard Theatre.
The pageant will be broadcast live around the state at 8 p.m. Saturday. Check local TV listings for details.
This year’s show will feature Hammons, Miss Louisiana 2007 Amanda Joseph May, Miss Louisiana 2011 Hope Fruge’, Miss Louisiana 2013 Jaden Hubbard, Miss Louisiana 2015 April Aran and Miss Louisiana 2019 Meagan Crews.
Ed Walsh and Melissa Whitworth will be the emcees. Also featured will be the Fleur de Lis Princesses and the Miss Louisiana Band and Dancers.
The Miss Louisiana Organization will award over $60,000 in cash scholarships this year, with over $500,000 in cash and in-kind scholarships made available.
