Missing DeRidder Man Jimmie Box

The investigation of Jimmie Box's, 26, disappearance has once again taken an unexpected turn. KPLC News broke an update on Box's case Wed. afternoon.

A person of interest has been taken into custody in Corpus Christi by the Texas Rangers and the U.S. Marshal’s Service in connection with the Box’s disappearance.

The multi-agency search for Box picked up on August 7 when the vehicle he was reportedly driving, a red Toyota Four Runner, was found.

“The vehicle that Mr. Box was reported last seen in was located in Calcasieu Parish,” said Sylvester Denmond, Chief of Detectives with the Beauregard Sheriff’s Office.

The vehicle was occupied by Zachary Sylvester, who was arrested by the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office on unrelated charges.

It was after that arrest and through interviews, that officials came to believe that Box had been kidnapped.

“At this particular time, we feel like Mr. Box has been kidnapped,” said Denmond. "Tomorrow we have two detectives from BPSO and two detectives from DPD heading to Corpus Christi to interview a person of interest in the case."

Denmond went on to say, “We have identified some other individuals that we believe will be responsible for the disappearance of Mr. Box. It’s just the fact of trying to put all the pieces to the puzzle together, putting the timeline together and you know the hardest part is trying to give the family some answers.”

What we knew prior to this update

Newton County Sheriff Billy Rowles said over the weekend that investigators had received information that the 26-year-old man had allegedly been shot and killed under or near the Highway 190 Bridge and that his body was in the waterway.

Newton County and Beauregard Parish deputies along with the Jasper County Emergency Corps and others first searched along the Sabine River Near Bon Wier.

It was reported searchers returned to that area, but instead concentrated their efforts in the heavily wooded areas along the river but the search yielded no results.

Box was last seen on Aug. 1.

He was reported missing by his parents to DeRidder police on Aug. 3.

Several agencies are working around the clock, including the DeRidder Police Department, the Beauregard Parish Sheriff’s Office, the Texas Rangers, Louisiana State Police, the FBI (Beaumont), and Newton County Sheriff’s Office.
