LWC Processes $41M in extended benefits to 140k Louisianans in 5 days

The Louisiana Workforce Commission

The Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) was among the first states in the nation to begin distributing $300 Federal Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) payments in addition to other unemployment benefit programs. Louisianans with active unemployment claims began seeing the federal stimulus payments in addition to their weekly UI amounts on Monday, January 4.

News release from the Louisiana Workforce Commission

Since Monday, LWC has distributed $41,796,000 in FPUC payments to 139,320 individuals.

“At this time we are asking for the public’s patience as we process claims and continue to update our system for paying benefits following the passage of the extended CARES Act programs,” said LWC Secretary Ava Dejoie.

LWC strongly encourages all claimants to monitor their HiRE accounts closely (louisianaworks.net/hire) and to utilize its online resources to reduce hold times and resolve claim issues whenever possible. Claimants should be sure LWC has the correct and current email address. We also encourage claimants to answer No Caller ID calls.

The original CARES Act provisions, enacted in April of 2020, expired on December 26, 2020. New legislation was not signed into law until December 27. Complete guidance from USDOL remains outstanding for the state of Louisiana, along with every other state, to provide certain provisions regarding the new relief bill.

LWC is diligently working to assist every citizen as we simultaneously implement new requirements including identity verification. Given the magnitude of the endeavor, LWC has published a new set of FAQs to help claimants navigate this new extension: http://www2.laworks.net/Downloads/PR/CARESactExt_FAQs.pdf

LWC will assist every eligible Louisiana claimant to receive his or her deserving benefits. Our UI call center has also extended its hours.

In all of 2020, LWC paid out more than $7 billion in federal and state unemployment insurance benefits to nearly 700,000 claimants.
