Red Devils fall to Grant in shootout

Pickering quarterback Marlon Freeney fired four touchdown passes in the Red Devils' loss to the Grant Cougars on Monday.

TIOGA - Despite Marlon Freeney's four touchdown passes and Deon Street scoring three rushing TDs, the Pickering Red Devils fell to the Grant Cougars on Monday night at Tioga High School, 61-48.

With the loss, Pickering fell to 1-1 on the season heading into a road game against Lake Arthur, a contest that might be played on Saturday.

Grant (2-0) took the opening lead of the contest when Brady Parker, who accounted for seven total touchdowns, found Eli Morrison on a 40-yard TD pass. Parker then tossed the ball to Jacob Mercer for the 2-point conversion for the 8-0 lead.

Not to be outdone, the Red Devils responded with an 11-yard TD run from Street and Freeney took the ball in for the conversion, tying the game at 8-8.

Pickering took its only lead of the game when Freeney fired a 78-yard touchdown pass to DeShawn Jackson for a 14-8 Red Devil advantage.

Grant reclaimed the lead when Parker scored on a 1-yard TD run and 2-point conversion. Parker followed that up with a 73-yard TD pass to Ashton Carter. Mercer added the PAT and Grant was up, 23-14.

The Red Devils pulled to within three on a 23-yard TD scamper from Street, but Grant answered with a 10-yard TD pass from Parker to Morrison to go up, 29-20.

A 22-yard touchdown strike from Freeney to Jackson and a subsequent 2-point conversion run from Freeney allowed the Red Devils to close the gap to 29-28.

Back-to-back 1-yard TD runs by Kareem Gaines pushed Grant out to a 41-28 lead, but a 29-yard touchdown toss from Freeney to Jackson cut the gap to 41-36, as Freeney added the conversion run.

Parker added two more touchdown passes to his total, connecting with Mercer from 10 yards out and with Carter from 6 yards, allowing Grant to open up a 53-36 advantage.

Freeney found Jackson for a fourth TD, this time on a 10-yard pass, cutting the Grant lead to 53-42.

Parker finished off the Grant scoring with a 3-yard run and 2-point conversion, giving the Cougars a 61-42 lead.

Street added his third touchdown of the game in the fourth quarter with a 65-yard gallop for the final score of the contest.

Parker completed 10-of-12 passes for 255 yards and five touchdowns while rushing for 90 yards and two more scores. Gaines added two touchdowns as he rushed for 155 yards in the win.

Carter had 155 receiving yards and two scores for Grant, while Morrison also had two touchdown receptions. Mercer added a TD reception.

Street ran the ball 15 times for 171 yards and three touchdowns, while Freeney accounted for 217 yards passing with four touchdowns.

Jackson had six catches for 172 yards and four touchdowns, while Evan Fernandez caught a pass for 45 yards.
