Wampus Cats hold off Rosepine, Lady Eagles roll
LEESVILLE - The Leesville duo of Julian Culvert and Keanu Pagan prevented new Rosepine head coach Logan Maddox from getting a win in his debut on Monday.
Culvert and Pagan combined for 46 points as Leesville held off a valiant Eagle effort, defeating Rosepine in the season opener for both teams, 60-48.
Leesville opened the game with a 7-0 run, only to watch Rosepine put together an 8-0 surge of its own to claim the lead about midway through the first.
However, the Cats took control and used a 10-1 run to close out the first period with a 17-9 lead.
During the second and third quarters, the Cats would eventually work their way into a 17-point lead at 42-25.
But the Eagles were far from done.
Behind the play of Brayden Williams, the Eagles went on a huge run, closing the gap to two points, 44-42. But Leesville came back to life behind Culbert to secure the win.
Culvert led the Cats with 26 points, while Pagan added 20 points. Williams paced the Eagles with 27 points.

The Rosepine Lady Eagles had four players reach double figures on Monday night as they defeated the Leesville Lady Cats, 84-21.
Rosepine was led by Kelly Norris with 18 points, while Ashlyn Smith notched 15 points. Addison Fruge and Taylor Farris each added 13 points.
The Lady Eagles raced out to a 19-3 lead at the end of one quarter and used a 26-6 outburst in the second to build a 45-9 cushion at the break.
It was all Rosepine the rest of the way as they cruised to the win.
Kathryn Keys paced Leesville with six points as Lara Cooley was made her debut as the Lady Cats' head coach.
