Hornets win regional meet, Lady Hornets third

The Hornbeck Hornets captured first place in the Region II-C track and field championships at Hackberry High School.

HACKBERRY - The Hornbeck Hornets are your regional track and field champions.

The Hornets racked up 120 points at the Region II-C championships at Hackberry High School on Tuesday, edging out the hosting Mustangs, who finished with 114 points.

Hicks took third in the boys' standings, while Evans was seventh and Simpson eighth.

On the girls' side, the Lady Hornets finished in third with 90 points as Reeves and Starks claimed the championship and runner-up trophies with 136 and 104 points, respectively.

Hicks was sixth with 42 points, while Evans was eighth and Simpson 10th.

The Hornets won four of the meet's events as John Jett, the Most Outstanding Boys' performer, was first in both the 800 and 1600 meters, while Ky Pittman took first-place in the javelin. The 800-meter relay team of Parker Alexander, William Weeks, Jaren Mitcham and Joseph Nolen were victorious as well.

Pittman is also a state qualifier in shot put and an alternate in the discus, while Nolen qualified for state in both the 110 and 300-meter hurdles.

Jett was joined by Condon as a qualifier in both the 1600 and 3200 meters. Condon was second in both races, while Jett was third in the 3200 meters. Cayden Fox took third in the 800 meters to also qualify for state.

Hicks had a number of qualifiers for state next week in Baton Rouge as Conner Harper will compete in the 100-meter dash, the long jump and triple jump. Joseph Williams is also a multiple-event qualifier for the Pirates in the long jump and triple jump.

Kase Busby and Juan Juarez also qualified for the Class C state meet in the high jump and discus, respectively.

Evans had a pair of state qualifiers in Caleb Williams and Lane Williamson in the 300-meter hurdles and 800 meters, while Simpson's Ean Allain is a multiple qualifier as he will compete in the 1600 and 3200 meters. He will also compete in the 800-meter relay with teammates Aiden Martin, Ethan Weatherford and Shain Rowe.

The Lady Hornets had three event wins at the regional meet as Hannah Mitchell won the shot put, Cali Wedgeworth topped the discus standings and Hannah Dahlhoff won the 400-meter dash.

Dahlhoff also qualified for the 1600-meter run as well as joining forces in the mile relay with teammates Jayda James, Kayleigh Park and Jaida Davis.

James will not only compete in the mile relay, but she is also qualified for state in the 800 and 1600 meters.

Other state qualifiers for Hornbeck were Hailey O'Banion and Park in the 3200 meters and Danzey Forehand in the discus.

Hicks won two events as Alyna Gilbert topped the field in the 1600 meters, while joining up with Maci Charrier, Reese Stephens and Avery Coffman to win the sprint relay.

Charrier also qualified for state in the 400-meter dash, while teammate Cheyanne Jackson will run in the 100 hurdles.

The Lady Eagles of Evans will be represented at state by Bailey Ramsey in the 300-meter hurdles as she was the best in the region.
