Lady Panthers tie for second at regional meet

NEW IBERIA - The Merryville Lady Panthers had a phenomenal day at Thursday's Region II-1A championships.

And as a result, the Lady Panthers qualified a number of athletes for the Class 1A state meet next Friday in Baton Rouge as they tied with Westminster Christian for runner-up in the regional meet.

Merryville and Westminster each finished with 75 points as Highland Baptist claimed the regional team title with 88 points.

The Lady Panthers were sparked by a number of solid performances, perhaps none more impressive than senior Maddie Mahfouz.

Mahfouz walked away from the regional meet with four gold medals. She won two individual events and ran in Merryville's two championship relay victories.

Mahfouz edged out teammate Mekyah Hooper in the high jump as both qualified for state. Mahfouz won with a height of 4-11, while Hooper was third at 4-10.

Additionally, Mahfouz grabbed first place in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.60 seconds.

Mahfouz joined forces with Hooper, McKenzie Speights and Samantha Johnson to win the 800-meter relay with a time of 1:52.97. Mahfouz anchored the mile relay team, which also features Hooper, Kaylie Lewis and Johnson, in their win as they finished with a time of 4:26.20.

Hooper also claimed second in the 409-meter dash with a time of 1:03.83, while Lewis was second in the long jump with a distance of 16-6.75.

Kailee Hickman will serve as an alternate for the state meet as she was fourth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.53 seconds.

One Merryville Panthers will serve as an alternate for the state meet as Frederick Wisby was fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:18.58.

East Beauregard had four qualifiers for the state meet, three on the boys' side.

Kobie Bailey was the top qualifiers in the regional pole vault event as he cleared 11 feet even.

Dillon Singleton took second in the boys' discus for the Trojans, while Chase Singleton was third in the high jump.

The lone Lady Trojan going to state is Kate Eggers in the 3200-meter run as she was third overall.
